Easy Japanese Coffee Jelly

A refreshing dessert made with strong coffee set with agar-agar, served with a sweetened condensed milk sauce and toppings of your choice.

Ingredients

  • 600 ml Brewed strong coffee (or water + instant coffee powder)
  • 1 packet Packet of powdered kanten (agar-agar)
  • 67 g Sugar
  • 45 ml Sweetened condensed milk
  • 45 ml Milk
  • to taste Toppings of your choice (optional; whipped cream, coffee beans, mint leaves)

Method

  1. Pour the strong coffee (or the water if using instant coffee) into a small saucepan. Add the kanten (agar-agar) powder. Whisk and bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cook for 2 minutes, whisking constantly, until the agar-agar has dissolved completely.
  3. Remove from the heat, add the sugar (and the instant coffee powder if using). Whisk until dissolved.
  4. Run a rectangular mold (about 15×14 cm or 20×20 cm) under cold water without drying it. Pour the hot mixture into the mold. For individual portions, let it cool for 5 minutes, then pour into glasses.
  5. Remove the bubbles from the surface with a kitchen torch or spoon. Let cool at room temperature until the jelly sets (about 45 to 60 minutes).
  6. Cover the mold with a paper towel and plastic wrap, then refrigerate for 4 to 5 hours.
  7. Remove the mold from the refrigerator, run a knife around the edges, unmold onto a cutting board, and cut into cubes about 1.3 cm wide.
  8. Divide the cubes among serving bowls. Pour over the prepared sweetened condensed milk sauce. Add toppings of your choice (whipped cream, coffee beans, mint). Enjoy.
