Old fashioned

Whiskey, sugar, bitters, orange zest: the grandfather of cocktails, slow and deep.

Ingredients

  • 6 cl bourbon
  • 1 cl cane sugar syrup
  • 3 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 piece orange
  • 1 gros cube ice cubes

Method

  1. Pour the syrup and bitters directly into an old fashioned glass.
  2. Add the bourbon and a single large ice cube.
  3. Stir slowly for about thirty seconds: the goal is to chill AND slightly dilute; taste as you go.
  4. Peel a wide strip of orange zest with a peeler, avoiding the white pith.
  5. Express the zest over the glass to spray its oils over the surface.
  6. Rub the zest along the rim of the glass and drop it in.
